Abstract
The study is an empirical analysis on self neglect of males older adults, and risk factors which trigger self-neglect behaviors. The purpose of this study is to prevent self neglect, and to provide useful information on establishing social welfare policies which aim to address risk factors. A total of 433 elderly males aged 65 or over a were selected through a quota sampling method. The records are part of data on 2015 survey on current status of senior citizens and policy effectiveness conducted by Busan City. In addition, descriptive analysis was carried out to figure out current status of self neglect and level of danger of risk factors. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was conducted to discover risk factors associated with self neglect. According to the results, an elderly male`s self neglect behavior increases as his subjective economic leve (¥â =.105, p<.05) and social network(¥â=-.114, p<.05) decrease. Moreover, the results show that an male older adult is more likely to conduct self neglect behaviors when he is depressed(¥â=.491, p<.001). Additionally, inconsistent with previous studies, the results demonstrate that the younger an elderly(¥â=-.128, p<.01) male is, the more self-neglect behaviors take place. In closing, the study suggests social welfare policies and practice to prevent self neglect of elderly males and to reduce risk factors.
